Dr. Luchuo Engelbert Bain, MD,MPH, MSc (Bioethics), MBA (Strategic Human Resources Management), PhD (Transdisciplinary Solutions in Global Health) is a physician, empirical bioethicist, and global health strategist passionate about reimagining how knowledge, power, and partnerships shape health outcomes in Africa and beyond. With over two decades of experience spanning research, policy, ethics, and program leadership, he is widely recognized for his transformative thinking on decolonizing global health, equitable partnerships, and evidence-informed policy.

My Background
Currently serving as Head of International Programs at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, Dr. Bain leads partnerships across more than 35 African countries, leading major initiatives at the intersection of sexual and reproductive health, antimicrobial resistance, AI ethics, climate-health, and health systems strengthening. He is also the founder of Global Health Otherwise, a thought-leadership platform challenging conventional wisdom and amplifying African voices in global health discourse.
Dr. Bain’s work sits at the nexus of ethics, equity, and innovation. He advocates for evidence paradigms that go beyond narrow methodological traditions to embrace lived experience, indigenous knowledge, and contextual relevance.
He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and serves on multiple global advisory bodies including the WHO-TDR Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee, the WHO Sexual Health and Well-being Advisory Group, Member of International Medical Advisory Panel of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Member of the Inaugural UNFPA led Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on sexual reproductive agency, Co-Chair of the Society for African Genomic Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (SAGeSA), Member, Steering Group, Advocacy, Resource Mobilisation and Communication Committee of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, and sits on the board of the Happier Lives Institute.
